I don't think that I can attempt to answer any of the 3 questions posed by Sankrant. Just wanted to tell everyone about Michael Woods' six-part series for PBS and the BBC - The Story of India. It is currently airing on KQED. Two episodes are broadcast every Monday since Jan 5th on KQED Channel 9 from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, so tomorrow (Jan 19th) will be the final two episodes.
Sankrant, Surajit - something tells me that you both have been watching it, too. :)
